Afterimages

An online video essay programme curated by Kevin B. Lee

Afterimages gathers video essays that insist on staying with images. The programme takes its cue from Kevin B. Lee’s film Afterlives, also screened at this festival, which follows difficult images into the archives, reconstructions and AI systems where they circulate long after their makers are gone. Several of these works use the desktop to follow images into the corners of the internet. Some reflect on the problem of witnessing the suffering of others from a distance. Others attend to the space where images used with good intentions lead to harmful effects, what Afterlives terms "violent care". Every work here can be watched online. On an internet that has grown restrictive, these works remain available to find their way into other lives.

The Netherlands’ first festival dedicated entirely to the essay film, at Cinema Kijkhuis and Museum De Lakenhal in Leiden, 19–22 September 2026.
