Listening to the Archive

Temporary Stored is an album and radiophonic project by sound artist KMRU (Joseph Kamaru) that critically engages with the colonial history of sound archives. This project draws on recordings from the repatriated Sound Archive of the Royal Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren, alongside field recordings and synthesizer sounds, the album interrogates how colonial institutions have collected, classified, and retained intangible cultural heritage. It invites listeners to consider sound as a site of restitution, proposing an emancipatory way of hearing archives shaped by colonial violence.
Temporary Stored is screened with Expedition Content in the block titled Listening to the Archive, which explores the colonial sound archive as both a record of extraction and a site of reconstituted listening. Bringing together two distinct approaches, the programme considers how acts of listening can challenge inherited narratives, reveal archival absences, and open new ways of encountering colonial histories.
