Japanese sound artist Toshiya Tsunoda has been for many decades a reference point for his field recording work. His work, rather than being documental or naturalistic, addresses the relation between space and cognition, rendering the vibration of objects audible, revealing the hidden beauty in each sonic detail.

This track belongs to a unique album, part of a series of re-workings and re-interpretations that Dutch experimental musician Frans de Waard commissioned to a number of artists, including Tsunoda, on the basis of recordings from his Kapotte Muziek project. Tsunoda’s approach to this project consisted in taking the original cassette Vier Stukken to Nagaura Bay in Yokosuko City, Japan and played back the Kapotte Muziek sounds within that environment. This way, Tsunoda explores the threshold between space and matter, the interaction between vibrational phenomena and the performance of attention. Placed in the context of the essay film, the exploratory nature of this work is brought to the fore.
